What is Achilles Tendonitis?

Achilles Tendonitis is irritation and injury to the thick band that attaches your calf muscle to your foot. The irritation can occur where it attaches to the bone called insertional achilles tendonitis or can occur a few centimetres above.

Achilles Tendonitis Symptoms

This type of injury is usually caused by overuse. It begins with pain near the top of your heel and into your calf after activity but can progress to pain and irritation in daily activities without Achilles Tendonitis treatment.

Achilles Tendonitis Treatment

A comprehensive treatment plan is usually the best to help with pain and function such as:

  • Achilles tendonitis exercises help to strengthen the foot and calf muscles.
  • Taping with KT Tape for Achilles Tendonitis can help to relieve pain during daily activities.
  • Many people have found relief from acupuncture, physical therapy or laser treatment for achilles tendonitis as well. Sometimes, one treatment modality works better for some than others. To find out more about these treatments, contact Burlington Natural Health Clinic and book an appointment with Dr. Walsh!
  • An Achilles Tendonitis brace or orthotic can lift the heel, reduce the stress on the tendon, and aid in recovery. The best shoes for achilles tendonitis treatment depends on your gait pattern, and many brands such as Brooks, Saucony or Asics have certain models that may be the best shoes for achilles tendonitis for men or women depending on your biomechanics.

We quite often get asked: “can shoes cause achilles tendonitis?”The Short answer is yes they could! Be sure to have your gait assessed by one Mobility on Mainway Chiropodists, Athletic Therapists, or Pedorthists.
